Urs Festival of Shrine Dargah Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Ajmer Sharif is Mostly called by different names by the Pilgrims / Devotees through out the world, such as.. Urs Khwaja Gharib Nawaz, Urs Khwaja Ajmeri, Urs Dargah Khwaja Sahib, Urs Dargah khwaja Saheb, Urs Khwaja Baba, Urs Chatti Sharif, Urs Sharif Ajmer, Urs Dargah Sharif Ajmer, Urs Shrine Ajmer, Urs Chishti, Urs Sufi, Urs Ajmer Sharif, Urs Ajmer Dargah Urs, Urs Darbar Sharif Ajmer Rajasthan, India.

The Dargah Sharif Ajmer, located at the foot of a barren hill, is the place where the Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti mortal remains lie buried. The Dargah (tomb) with a marble dome is situated in the center of a courtyard and is surrounded by a silver platform. It's believed that the shrine is a place of wish fulfillment for those who pray with devout and pure hearts. People of all religious faiths visit the Dargah and make offerings of rose and jasmine flowers to seek the blessings of the Khawaja. Millions of devotees from all over the world visit the Dargah to pay homage to Khawaja on Urs Ajmer Shareef, the solemn memory of Khawaja. The revered saint left for heavenly abode after a six-day prayer in seclusion and for this their devotees celebrate 'Urs Ajmer Shariff' every year during the first six days of Rajjab, the 7th month of the Islamic calendar.

Chadar; Ghilaph & Neema which are votive offerings for the tomb are offered by several hundred thousand devotees. An interesting ritual is the looting of Kheer (Milk Pudding) which is cooked in two large cauldrons called Degs and distributed to the devotees as tabarruk (blessed food). One of the main attractions at the Dargah is the qawwali programs organized during the famous annual 'Urs Ajmer Shareif' festival. Mehfils & Qawwalis are held and mass prayer calls for the eternal peace of the mankind. Professional singers called 'qawwals' sing songs in praise of the saint in a characteristic high-pitched voice. The 'Sufiana kalam' sung by these artists make a spellbound effect on listeners prompting them to clap to the rhythm of musical instruments.

Flag Hoisting

Annual Urs commences with Flag Hoisting at Buland Darwaza.

Urs of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (R.A.) is celebrated every year in the first week of Rajab, on seeing the moon of Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar. On the appearance of the moon for the month of Rajab, there comes a change in daily routine which is generally held at the Holy Shrine. The main entrance of the Holy Tomb which in ordinary days is closed at night, is kept open through out the day and night (barring for 2 or 3 hours at night) during the six days of Urs. All other daily and weekly programmes are suspended and few functions and ceremonies commence from that night.

drums are beaten to herald the commencement of the annual ceremony. The permanent Chauki (troupe) of qawwals arrive, and after Maghrib (sunset prayers) sit infront of the Shrine and sing the following verses:

“Bartui mehfil-shahana-mubarak-bashad
Saqia-badao-paimana mubarak bashad”
(Felicitation to thee for this blessed and majestic assembly; salutation, ‘Oh Saqi for your bountiful goblet of sacred wine).
And,
“Ilahi ta-abd-astana-i-yar-rahe
Yeh-asra-hai-gharibon-ka-barqarar rahe”

(Oh God, may this Shrine of the beloved exist till the last day, may this refuge of the poor remain forever!)

Qul Day ( Final Day)

Qul ceremony takes place on the last day of Urs which is also the sixth day of the month of Rajab. This is considered to be a very important day. After the morning prayer, people start gathering the Holy Tomb.The activities include recital of Quran, Darood, Shijra-e-Chishtia and other verses. People also tie small turbans on each other’s head and pray for the benefit of the people, for peace, prosperity and happiness.

On the visibility of moon from 1st Rajab to 6th Rajab , special bath (Ghusal) is given at 1:00 A.M (midnight) regular for six days by me Syed Sameer Chishty Shah & Sandal Sharif is also presented at the tomb for above these days.After this the Duago prays for all zaireens.

The Deghs (Cauldrons) Services for Deg Ajmer, Degs & Lainger, Dargah Khwaja Gharib Nawaz Ajmer Sharif India

Inside Dargah Sharif Ajmer two big Deghs (pots) are installed for cooking Niaz (purely vegetarian food; cooked with rice, ghee, nuts, safron & sugar). The system of cooking food in cauldron (Degh) was first introduced by Akbar. Since then a large quantity of food of different kinds has always been cooked in Deghs generally at night, and is distributed among the people after Fajr (morning) prayers.

Tomes Coryat, who visited Ajmer, at the time of Jahangir, says that the Mughal emperor once ordered the preparation of Khichri in the Degh to be distributed among 5000 people, taking out the first on a platter with his own hands, followed by the Queen, Noor Jehan, and other ladies of the Harem. Once, Shahjahan mixed the meat of a Nilgai (one of the species of antelope) in the preparation of Degh, which he had shot during a hunting expedition. In the second half of the eighteenth century, when Ajmer came under the control of the Marathas and Rajputs, a new kind of food known as Kesaria Bhat (saffroned sweet rice) was cooked in these Deghs and that has continued to this day.

Small Degh : It was presented by Emperor Akbar, 2400 kgs of food can be cooked in it that approximately amount to 60,000.00 Indian Rupees. Big Degh : It was presented by Emperor Jahangir, 4800 kgs of food can be cooked in it and the cost comes to about 120,000.00 Indian Rupees. N.B. : 1. All these Deghs are cooked by Zaireen (pilgrims/devotees) who can afford to cook, Bavakalat (through) respective Khadims of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz. If anyone of you has a plan to cook Degh at any time of the year, please let me know in advance, so that I may make the necessary arrangements required, as Deghs are cooked all the yearround. It can be cooked in your personal presence and also in your absence, on your behalf or any sort of Niyaz you want to cook other then Degh...

LANGER (FREE DISTRIBUTION OF FOOD)

Right from the time of HUZOOR KHWAJA GHARIB NAWAZ (R.A) the Langar is cooked twice a day in the Darbar of HUZOOR KHWAJA GHARIB NAWAZ (R.A) and is distributed among the poor without any discrimination

FATHEAS

We perform monthly fathea of HAZRAT KHWAJA GHARIB NAWAZ (R.A) on every sixth of Islamic month known as Chatti Sharief beside that we also perform the fathea and urs of prophet MOHAMMED (S.A.W), and all the famous successors and predecessors of PROPHET MOHAMMED (S.A.W) and of GHARIB NAEAZ (R.A). Special function are held on eid meeladun nabi, urs of KHULFA-A-RASHIDIN and of GHAUSPAK. Shab-e-Miraje , Shaban-e-moazam etc. we welcome anybody to take part in all these pious and auspicious functions and fatheas and get benefited by heavenly reward

GILAF (VELVET CLOTH TO COVER HOLY MAZAR-E-AQDAS)

To cover the Holy Mazar a velvet cloth is required which is offered by the devotes of KHAWAJA GHARIB NAWAZ (R.A) this velvet cloth is usually 42 meters in size
